Woven Bookmarks and Persistence

In 5th grade art class, students are learning about fiber arts and their connection to persistence.  Specifically, students are making woven bookmarks.  Here are some examples. 









Weaving bookmarks teach persistence because while not difficult to create, they do demand engagement and concentration.  It is not an activity that can be done with multitasking or talking to peers.  When the student is engaged, the bookmark is made rather quickly.  If the student is not engaged, the bookmark can tangle or a loop may be missed.
